Nothing

Another day without remembering my dreams. It’s been an exhausting few days, so I’m not surprised.

The first enchantment

K and I have struggled to come up with a debut sigil trial for Year of Magick. We needed a test that minimized the possibility of confirmation bias, coincidence or misreporting. We also wanted it to be fun, and something within reach. Since we decided to meet up for the C4 Star Wars convention in May, that seemed like the obvious focal point.

A sigil is a magickal symbol that represents will or intent. In its most simplistic form, the caster develops a brief statement of intent, strips out the vowels and duplicate consonants, and then takes the remaining letters and constructs an abstract symbol. The caster then focuses on the symbol, or sigil, in his or her mind’s eye while entering a state of gnosis. Common methods include chanting, masturbation and the death posture breathing exercise. The caster visualizes the sigil glowing brighter with power until, at climax, projecting it out into the universe. Then comes the hard part – not thinking about the enchantment.

There are many schools of thought about sigilization. Some hold that the caster is literally altering the world to impose his or her will upon it. Others, myself included, view magick as nothing more than a psychological self-improvement exercise. In this interpretation, sigils help focus the subconscious to help one accomplish one’s goals. I specifically wanted to test against this hypothesis by selecting trial sigil goals that could not possibly be achieved through personal effort alone.

The trial consists of six sigils. K and I each drew up three, tied to the C4 convention. Since the event is in May, this gives us ample time to forget what statement of intent each sigil represents. Each of us selected a sigil to be charged or activated by the other. We are then supposed to charge on of the other two sigils at random prior to C4. The third sigil remains uncharged as a sort of control:

• Sigil One: charged by other person
• Sigil Two: charged by self
• Sigil Three: not charged

This is done twice as there are two of us. We have recorded the original sigils and statements of intent in sealed envelopes, which will be opened after C4 to prevent confirmation bias. Neither of us knows what the other’s sigils represent. We also decided that success is qualified by occurring in the presence of both of us. This should cut down on confirmation bias and misreporting, as the other must agree that a given event matches the statement of intent enough to count as a success.

I have also included a tier system to my sigils to test against likelihood and coincidence. One is fairly general and is likely to happen even without magick. One is quite possible but distinct enough to be considered a success. The third is somewhat unlikely but still possible.

After C4 we will share the statements of intent and our experiences and see how they add up.

Lords of slumber

A very busy weekend – weddings and reunions and three solid days of family events – disrupted my sleep patterns. I can’t remember any dreams from last night. I do have a fragment from the weekend, however. A and I went to a party in the park. Someone had laid out a square track of Slip ‘N Slides about the size of a baseball field. There were lots of people running and sliding and for some reason we knew they were swingers. This inspired me to tie a giant rope to a piece of wooden playground equipment in the center – if you held the end of the rope you could swing around the Slip ‘N Slides at incredible speeds and just spin around. A little while later A and I decided to walk to a store near the park to get something to drink. We saw a concerned citizen report a crazy public swinger party to two cops sitting in a police car. One of the cops was Keith Mars from Veronica Mars and the other was the mother from Malcolm in the Middle. We wanted to warn them that it was just a Slip ‘N Slide party and everyone was wearing bathing suits, but the cops winked and we knew they were planning on joining in instead of busting it.

Return of the dreaming

Getting ready for full updates starting Monday, including the first sigil enchantment for Year of Magick. K and I have devised a system that we hope will weed out confirmation bias and similar tricks. We won’t know the payoff until the end of May, but we’ll outline everything this week.

I don’t recall most of my dreams last night. Just a flash of finding a Galactic Marine Star Wars figure at the store and getting excited about buying it. (I don’t know if they actually make this figure and I don’t collect Star Wars figures in real life, although every once in a while if I see a cool one I’ll pick it up and lose it three months later.) When I got to the register I was appalled to discover it was merely a standard clonetrooper with blue trim and a tissue taped over his face to mimic the Galactic Marine mask. That’s about it.

Naturally

A very busy week here at Indolence has left updates by the wayside. Normal operations resume Monday, including our first enchantment (although we won’t know if it pays off until the end of May). By way of apology, here is a picture of my bum.You know you want to smack it

Dream country

I forgot my dream as soon as I woke up this morning. I was carrying about memories of the weekend’s dreams for a bit but they’ve gone before I can write them here.

Three of Swords (reversed)

Today’s card is the Three of Swords (reversed): Mental alienation, error, loss, distraction, disorder, confusion.

Six of Wands (reversed)

Today’s card is the Six of Wands (reversed): Apprehension, fear – as of a victorious enemy at the gate, treachery, disloyalty, as of gates being opened to the enemy.

Smashing.

Yesterday’s card seemed applicable in the morning; I had to stay in and wait for FedEx to arrive so I could sign for a rather impressive delivery. But the driver came fairly early and I still popped out to go running and again in the evening to grab dinner. There were no psychological associations with the card, either.

Summary: MISS

Sleep issues

I woke up several times last night, and each time I realized I was waking from a dream. But this morning I couldn’t remember anything at all. Even more frustrating, I slipped into a quasi lucid dream state in the morning when A got up to take a shower. This is a state where I am aware of dreaming and can exert a very mild influence on the dream’s storyline. I’m more likely to experience this state if I fall back asleep briefly just after waking up – often I can continue the dream I woke up from in a “powered up” quasi lucid form. Of course, when I got up to take my shower I forgot everything!

Stillness

The stillness exercise still comes to me easily when lying down. I can clock a good 25 minutes without feeling stifled, but I have to wonder if I’m doing it wrong. My mind is all over the place during these exercises, and surely the point is inner stillness as well? This afternoon I will see how long I can go concentrating on a single thought, as well as attempting the stillness exercise wiin a sitting position.
